Supporting students from across the world means there are always plenty of opportunities to contribute. You can volunteer with Ashinaga’s different programs in various locations.

Opportunities available:

Tsudoi volunteer

The tsudoi summer camps take place across Japan every year between August and September. We are always looking for international students in Japan who would like to volunteer, share their culture and experiences, and most of all have a fun summer!

  • When: 4-5 days in August or September
  • Where: Nagasaki, Hyogo, Gifu, Aichi, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Gunma, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures
  • Ideal for: Current international students at Japanese universities
  • Ideal skills: Good English ability and at least a conversational level of Japanese

Fundraising volunteer

Ashinaga holds fundraising drives twice a year across Japan. These fundraisers are primarily organized by the Ashinaga students, but all members of the public are welcome to get involved in building a future for disadvantaged youth in Japan and around the world. Young or old, Japanese or otherwise—everyone is invited to join!

  • When: April and October
  • Where: All major train stations in Japan
  • Ideal for: Anyone
  • Ideal skills: Positive attitude, confidence in speaking to the public

Rainbow House facilitator

Our Rainbow House facilities in Kobe, Tokyo, and the Tohoku region hold regular training programs for volunteers looking to learn how best to support the emotional well-being of young people. Once trained, these facilitators can take part in the regular tsudoi programs held for elementary and middle-school students throughout the year.

  • When: All year
  • Where: Ashinaga Rainbow Houses in Kobe, Tokyo, and Tohoku
  • Ideal for: Anyone
  • Ideal skills: The training is held in Japanese, so a high level of Japanese is required.

Office volunteer

We are open to people offering their time and skills at our various offices around the world. Volunteers will help with day-to-day office administration, or may be assigned to assist on specific projects.

  • When: Opportunities will be advertised as they become available.
  • Where: Japan (Tokyo, Kobe, Sendai); Uganda (Kampala); Senegal (Dakar); USA (Washington, D.C.); France (Paris); and the UK (London)
  • Ideal for: Anyone
  • Ideal skills: Proactive attitude, autonomy, and near-native level Japanese, French, or English

Student chapters

Student-run organizations are now launching on campuses across Europe, North America, and Asia in support of Ashinaga. They work with regional offices and Ashinaga students to hold awareness events related to development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Together they aim to start dialogues on campus about how to support the development of the next generation of leaders.

  • Where: Various universities across North America, Europe, and Asia
  • Ideal for: Current students
  • Ideal skills: Event organization, public speaking, creativity
