Ashinaga in Europe
Connecting Ashinaga to the European continent
In 2016, Ashinaga established two offices in Europe—one in Paris and one in London—to support the Ashinaga Africa Initiative across the continent and spread general awareness about our organization. Their main responsibilities are supporting our students studying at European universities, maintaining relations with partner universities, and working with members of the Kenjin-Tatsujin International Advisory Council and external partners to develop the Ashinaga Africa Initiative.
The Ashinaga UK office in London is responsible for the UK and Ireland, whereas the Ashinaga France office in Paris is responsible for continental Europe.
Moving away from home into a completely different culture and environment can be challenging. This is why a key aspect of the Ashinaga Africa Initiative is the consistent support that we provide to our students. During their time at a university abroad, students are regularly contacted by a member of the Ashinaga Student Support Team to ensure they are integrating well into their university and keeping on top of their studies.
Students are also matched with a volunteer mentor who is typically of a similar age, has studied in the same country, and has volunteered at one of Ashinaga’s offices in the past. These mentors regularly meet with students to ensure they have someone to turn to if they have any personal issues while attending university.
We also work to maintain a sense of community among our students, which is why we facilitate regular tsudoi programs among our students in Europe. This gives them a forum in which to catch up and share their experiences, as well as gain inspiration and guidance from workshops and guest speakers.
Progress so far:
- 2015: 6 students
- 2016: 19 students
- 2017: 37 students (estimated)
Close attention is also paid to finding universities that provide a high-quality education and support to Ashinaga scholars. Ashinaga aims to form meaningful connections with these universities through offering student internships, volunteer projects, and other opportunities that mutually benefit the educational institution and Ashinaga. Partnership with Campus France
Ashinaga France has entered into a partnership with campus France to support Ashinaga students who will be undertaking their studies in the country. Through this partnership, Campus France provides logistical assistance to our students in France, and helps to connect us with different offices in francophone Sub-Saharan Africa to help facilitate the university and visa application process before the students arrive in France.
Kenjin-Tatsujin Members in Europe
We also work closely with our Kenjin-Tatsujin members in Europe, including Mr. Louis Schweitzer, Chairman of the Council, to help expand our network, including finding new partner universities and career opportunities for our students.
